Place An Order
Riley's wants your job.
We try to make getting a job to us as easy as possible, but every client and/or job has their own specific requirements. Because of these varying requirements, and especially if you have not used us in the past, please take the time to review the information provided below, and choose a job submission method that is best suited to your needs.
A few points to keep in mind.
Regardless of the job submission method you choose, we need a minimum of 3 very important pieces of information:
- Contact information – Name and phone number as a minimum
- Your job file(s)
- Your job specifications – B&W or color, single or double sided, media type,
page size, etc.
These are the minimum requirements. Without the above information your job will be delayed while we contact you for the missing information.
Job submission methods:
- Riley's pickup
- Client Drop off
- FTP
- RDD Riley's online order form
- ReproDesk
We accept most of the current popular digital media types including but not limited to:
- CD
- DVD
- Compact Flash
- SD cards
- MMC
- MicroDrives
- USB drives
- Any USB, Firewire, or SCSI external hard drive
Contact our customer service departments if you have other types on media. We can usually accommodate you.
What job submission method should you use?
When choosing a method to use to get an electronic job to Riley's, there are 2 main factors to consider – job type (Printing or Plotting) and file size.
Printing Orders
Printing orders make up the majority of the electronic printing work we do. Finished items can be as small as a business card or as large as vehicle wrap. Regardless of the size of the printing job the file type we prefer to receive is PDF. PDF has become the defacto standard for electronic printing because a correctly produced PDF contains all the components required to view and print a document.
Pickup or Drop-off
Does your job contain hardcopy documents or are your files very large?
If the answer to either of those questions is yes, then the old tried and true methods may be the best.
Of course, if your job is a hardcopy or scanning job you need to get your originals to us, but if your job is a very large digital file then burning it to a CD or DVD or copying it to any of the digital media types we support may be the quickest way to get your job to us.
Riley's offers free pickup of any job within the Calgary and Edmonton city limits or if you prefer, you can drop off your job at any of our convenient locations.
Email - convenient but usually has file size limitations
One of the easiest job submission methods is Email. Simply create an Email that contains your contact information – especially your name and phone number – add your job specifications, attach your file(s) and send it to us. Please be aware that although we do not have a limit on the size of an email we can accept, most companies and ISPs do limit the size on an Email you can send (usually around 5 MB). Check with your IT department or ISP for more information.
FTP - unlimited file size but, job specifications must be provided separately
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol and is one of the oldest and simplest internet protocols. It is a way to transfer a file from your computer to our FTP server using the internet. FTP doesn't have any built-in mechanism to supply us with your contact information or job specifications so you must include a text file with your contact information and specifications zipped together with your job file. You could also send us an Email with your information, specifications and file name(s) you FTPed to us or call our customer service department with the information after you have sucessfully uploaded your file.
RDD - unlimited file size, online job ticket, can create a PDF soft proof of your job
RDD (Riley's Digital Direct) is system that we provided to our clients that allows you to submit your jobs to us for production, see a soft proof on your job, and even reorder previously archived jobs.
RDD requires you to setup a user ID and password before you can use the system, but once your ID is setup, you are ready to go. It allows you to upload file(s), specify job types and specifications and because it is always tied to your user ID you do not have to tell us who you are everytime you submit an order. It will also allow you to compile a complex printing job with multiple files and multiple stocks if you need to.
If you reorder documents on a regular basis, we can archive your documents online so that all you have to do is logon, specify the document and quantity required and we will produce your job with the exact same specifications as last time.
Plotting Orders
Plotting jobs have highly speciallized requirements and as such we provide a different method of job submission for plotting than we do for other printing jobs.
Plotting is the printing of architectural and/or engineering drawings used for construction. The most common application that clients plot from is AutoCAD with Microstation being the second most popular program.
Plotting is a highly specialized type of printing, so much so that we provide, free of charge, an application called ReproDesk Remote to our clients so that they can preview their drawings on screen, set sheet order and sheet size and specify binding options before they send us a job.
Although plotting jobs can be sent to us using any of the methods and/or media described above in the printing section, it is easier for you and for us if you use ReproDesk. Without ReproDesk you must supply not only your raw drawing files but also reference files (X-Refs), fonts, drawing scale, pen weights and sheet size.
With ReproDesk there is no limit to the number of drawings you can put in an order or the file size(s) of an order.
The ReproDesk application and instructions are contained in a Zip file that you can download from the Reprodesk link below or if you prefer we can send you a CD. If you have any questions about ReproDesk please contact us at either of our Main Branch locations.

File Size
While we have gone to great lengths to remove any limitations on the size of files we can accept via the internet, you must be aware that large files may take a while to upload. There are a number of factors that affect upload speed that are out of our control.
If you have a large file and a tight time frame, job pickup or drop-off may be the best job submission method.
